Typism Book

Submissions are now open for the first ever Typism Book.
The book will be released in September as part of the Typism Conference.

ARTWORK SPECIFICATIONS

Please read this information carefully.

Trim size: 6 inch (w) x 9 inch (h)/15 cm (w) x 23 cm (h)—add 5mm bleed if required
Artwork specs: Black & White artwork only.
Style: Crisp, clean typographic vectors will print best, but some B&W tone is allowed in your typography submissions. We are looking for all forms of the written word: calligraphy, typography, type design, hand-drawn type, hand-lettered type, beautiful handwriting and so on.
Resolution: 300 DPI
Format: TIFF, EPS or PDF

Any submissions that do not follow these guidelines will not be considered.

Deadline 14 July 2013

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR WORK

Save two copies of the files you wish to submit:
1. A high resolution file for printing (as specified above) saved as an EPS, TIFF or PDF.
2. A low resolution copy for emailing, saved as a 72 DPI PNG or JPG.

Please make sure your low res file is no bigger than 1Mb per image.

Typism – Creative Typography Conference

Gold Coast Typography Conference is the first of its kind in Australia‘TYPISM’ is the brainchild of ‘tactile typographer’ and Griffith University lecturer Dominique Falla, and will see seven of Australia’s best typographers, type designers,calligraphers and logo designers coming together to talk about their work at the first creative conference in Australia to focus purely on the craft of typography.

The conference is aimed at design students and professionals in particular, but as organizer Dominique Falla points out, “if you can read and write, you already have an appreciation of the written word,” but it would appear that Typism encourages you to take this ‘appreciation’ to obsessive levels. A recent YouTube video, produced by Kaz Films, portrays design students as ‘type addicts’ confessing their “shameful obsession with typography” to the camera as a tongue-in-cheek parody of government public service announcements.

“Typography can be viewed as a strange obsession, because not everyone understands how wonderful a well-drawn ampersand really is, or the work that goes into designing the perfect typeface,” explains Dominique, but as they say in the video: “Typism understands.”

About Typism

Typism is a one-day conference featuring seven Australian speakers, including Gemma O’Brien, who recently had her typographic artwork showcased in every Woolworth’s store over Christmas as part of the ‘Fresh Christmas’ campaign.

The In-Between – Exhibition – Solo Gus Eagleton

THE IN-BETWEEN
The In-Between does not undermine a deeper understanding of what a gesture adds. A life of its own that goes on beneath the image. Actions tied together with life experience, logic of space, a great idea, a personality, a motion, a location. We may quickly take action, touching-base, while remaining on the move. In general, we suggest fluency and ease in the city, beyond state of mind. Construction of surroundings, all its elements intimately packed into a frame – the crossing cars, the comings and goings of people – oblivious busyness. Yet, the meticulousness of action, partly because responsive individuals inhabit the world built for them. Gestures give us logic of space, a great idea of personality – an environment for all that ‘meaningless business’.

GUS EAGLETON
Gus Eagleton’s art has explored figurative painting on canvas and in urban street art, where he’s used aerosol paint and oils together in small compositions and across massive murals. Central to his latest body of work is an interest in the dichotomies, and the tension between these poles that manifest in the urban landscape. He explains:
As economic growth fluxuates, so to does infrastructure, this correlation has a direct association to a living organism both expanding and deteriorating. Sky risers ascend and the long forgotten remanets of the old world slowly deteriorate. This notion of a living moving infrastructure is a direct link to people, a structural doppelganger, shadowing cultural traits and trends. The theory of Apollonian and Dionysian is just one of many dichotomies with a relation to two complete opposites in simultaneous harmony. Apollonian being ordered and imperialistic, while Dionysian is free and rebellious. This series of paintings looks for aesthetic beauty within infrastructure by looking at categorical but harmonious opposites and relating them to economic expansion and deterioration, enabling the viewer to delve into the human condition.1
Gus Eagleton undertook a Bachelor of Fine Art from Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, between 2011-12. He has exhibited in artist-run and independent spaces around Australia and London. Eagleton has been the recipient of several awards including: Lilli Pilli Youth Award NSW (2008); Green Dragon Highly commended Award, Brisbane (2009); Under-Grade Painting Award Queensland Collage of Art Brisbane (2012) and finalist in the GAS award (graduate exhibition and espresso garage award) (2012). He was recently featured in Australian Art Collector magazine, Issue 62, 2012. Eagleton does commission work, including mural work and has pieces in private collections all around Australia.

Hadieh is fine artists living in Brisbane. Born in Tehran, The core of her art practice involves visually interpreting experiences that help her toward greater self-awareness. Omar Khayyam and other great Persian poets expressed the idea that a coherent goal in life can be reached from single, immediate events and experiences, and this is pivotal to her work.

She started to explore her life and emotions through art some years ago. The end result is something similar to a visual diary recorded by a woman with an eastern-poetic view of all their experiences.This I call My Visual Biography.

Hadieh paintings can be seen as figurative. Their motifs are taken mainly from real life situations such as a figure indoors, a domestic interior, land scapes or still-lifes.

Gold Coast hipsters vote with their feet for the One Way Street Party, a laneway-style art and music festival that snapshots the city’s emerging cultural scene. At One Way, indie bands, live art projects and street markets ladened with one-off vintage fashions swirl against a canvas of back-street bitumen.

Artists have their say in One Way’s cultural projects; an eclectic mix of live art displays and interactive exhibits perfect for the budding or long term artist. Take the time to browse the twelve diverse exhibits, and have a chat to the artist. While you’re there, pop into fan favourite, Skatedecksabition, and see the result of talented artists pushing themselves to new extremes, as they create a traditional artwork on a non-traditional canvas – the skate deck.

Graduate Art Show and Expresso Garage Awards

This is the fourth year Griffith University Art Gallery has run the Graduate Art Show (GAS) in conjunction with the Fine Art Graduate Student end of year exhibition. Students from Fine Art, Photography, and Bova CAIA, in their final year (no subjects in 2013), undertaking either an Undergraduate, Honours or Postgraduate degree are eligable to apply for entry into the Graduate Art Show. Works by shortlisted finalists accepted to exhibit are then judged for the Expresso Garage Award which is announced on opening night – 21 November. In the past Josh Milani, from Milani Gallery has been a judge.

Graduate Art Show (GAS) will exhibit from 21 November 2012 to 9 February 2013.

Mr Simon Wright, Director of Griffith Artworks and Professor Ross Woodrow, Deputy Director Postraduate and Research, Queensland College of Art, will officiate the awards event.

From New York, to London, to Cuba, secret supper clubs and pop-up restaurants offer an alternative dining experience for those looking for something new, fun and exciting. Goldtoast, based on the Gold Coast, is a small popup restaurant with roving premises, where guests eat from a set menu and are expected to fraternise with other guests who they may not know… it all seems quite fun doesn’t it?

The next dinner we are hosting is linked with the current exhibition being held in the gallery at the Kirra Hill Community and Culture Centre, Christopher McKenzies “Masculine Coma”.
